Plum 360™ Pump Integration With Allscripts Sunrise™ EHR

The integration of ICU Medical MedNet™ with this global health IT leader provides clinicians with reduced workflow steps, accurate infusion setup and timely documentation.

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Sept. 18, 2018 – ICU Medical, Inc., a worldwide leader in the development, manufacture and sale of innovative medical devices used in infusion therapy and critical care applications, has successfully integrated the ICU Medical MedNet safety software to Allscripts Sunrise EHR. The integration includes both smart pump programming and infusion documentation to provide hospitals with infusion safety, nurse satisfaction and greater visibility to patient care.

Plum 360Smart pump programming and infusion documentation leverage the consistent messaging approach established by the nonprofit Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) standards body. This solution sends HL7 messages from electronic health records (EHRs) to infusion pumps to display the order parameters which are reviewed by the nurse prior to the nurse starting the pump. This solution expands on ICU Medical’s more than 10 years of integration experience with ICU Medical MedNet  IV-EHR interoperability.

The Plum 360 infusion system provides full interoperability with patient EHRs, reducing the need for manual input and transcription of infusion data to better manage patient safety and clinician workflows. In addition, Plum 360 features closed system air management to minimize alarms and patient therapy interruptions, contamination risk and exposure to hazardous medications. Unique to the Plum 360 is the direct and continuous control of secondary infusions for a single access line. This cassette- based infusion setup addresses one of the top hazards in medication administration recently cited by ISMP (Institute for Safe Medication Practices). This control ensures the secondary infusion is delivered on time and documented accurately in the EHR.

“ICU Medical continues to focus on integration of our Best in KLAS Plum 360 infusion pumps. We are excited to join forces with Allscripts in delivering interoperability to our mutual customers, which they have been asking for,” said Matthew Hutchings, ICU Medical’s senior director of marketing and innovation for IV Systems. “Recognizing the significant value that interoperability brings to a hospital, ICU Medical has focused on improving integration in infusion therapy for more than a decade.”

“Allscripts is excited to team up with ICU Medical to not only take advantage of technology to enhance patient safety, but to also decrease the cognitive burden on our clinicians by automating the IV infusion workflow,” said Allscripts’ Vice President of Product Management, Paul Minton.

Demonstrations of this new integration — available in Sunrise 17.3 cumulative update and Sunrise 18.4 new release — can be seen at the Allscripts Client Experience (ACE) User Group for Hospitals & Health Systems (HHS) in St. Louis, Mo., USA on Oct. 3-5, 2018.
